Good TV

Television: where would people be without it? Probably quite bored and lacking coverage of such wonderous things as knowing in-depth about Cellulite treatment and the flying behaviour of the rarest birds of pray is where. They’d also be forced to make conversation, which is a terrifying thought for our technologically obsessed generation.

I have never been a fan of TV, and that’s putting it mildly. Strangely, though, I love watching films. But I have a good argument to back this seemingly hypocritical clash of statements up and here it is: you can pick the films you want to watch, but you can’t pick the TV programs you want to see. You may think that when you go through the TV guide, and put a tick next to the chosen programs, you are deciding what to watch, but you aren’t, of course. The TV has already chosen for you, you see. That’s why millions of people end up watching the rubbish on the Channel with a number one below 6: they turn the TV on and it sucks them in. How sad a state of affairs is that?

But TV is good for some things and there’s no denying it. The news is one of them, and documentaries is another. But there’s a third reason, of course, which is as follows: quite simply, the TV shrinks human bodies to an easily watchable size and allows bored wives and husbands to check out members of the opposite sex without barely raising an eye-lid. The two-dimensional screen is just perfect for this purpose. Long live the TV!
