The state of video games today

As technology has progressed, so have video games. Gone are the days of two dimensional scrolling across a screen to fight bad guys with only two buttons. Instead, now we have almost cinematic quality graphics that allow superbly designed characters to explore lush and epic three dimensional worlds that can be truly beautiful to look at.
The gaming world has actually become a bigger money earning industry than the movies, which is astonishing considering how long movies have been around and the relatively short time in comparison that top class games have been around.
Some of the games of modern times are fantastic, and so much better than the games of even only five years ago. Titles such as Oblivion and Fallout 3 show us how big and open ended games can be, with many hours of play time. However, the issue with some of the games being released now is that those making the games are concentrating on the wrong aspects of video game production.
Because of all the new technology, many companies are capable of creating games that look fantastic, with jaw droppingly good graphics. The issue with this is that too much time is spent in the design studio, creating great looking heroes and fantastic levels, and too little time is spent on the elements of gameplay and the plot. We end up with games that last around six to ten hours, with weak stories and frustrating game play.
There is something to be said about the way games used to be made, when lush graphics were not the main issue and simply telling a good story was. That is not to say all new games are like that, many aren’t, but, at the same time, there are too many that are. Perhaps we need to learn a lesson from the past and concentrate on what matters in a game once more.
I need all of your help, I am trying to think of something for my sister as a gift (it is her birthday coming up soon). When I was having a chat with her the other evening she said that she would like a new set of running gadgets . Anyone know of a close place to get them?
