The Music of ‘Twin Peaks’.

The Music of 'Twin Peaks'.

‘Twin Peaks’ was a wonderful television programme. There were just so many things in it to talk about. Every week it could leave us confused, scared or intrigued. But whatever happened in each episode, we would always be begging for more.

When David Lynch and Mark Snow put it all together they managed to add all of the right ingredients. The characters were brilliantly dreamed up, the photography was perfectly done and the story was totally riveting; and when I say the story, I mean for each episode as well as overall.

Choosing the right music for the show must have been incredibly difficult. After all, this wasn’t your common old garden TV programme. What sort of thing would sort the strangeness of the series? I needed to contain so many different key elements if it was ever going to fit in; mystery, love, terror, absurdity and the unknown. It needed to be a musical equivalent of the surreal… And that is where Lynch chose to employ the talents of Julee Cruise and Angelo Badalamenti. It was a decision he would not regret.

Badalamenti had already scored ‘Blue Velvet’ for Lynch so the director was familiar with his work. His style was perfectly suited to ‘Twin Peaks’ as it was just as edgy and unpredictable as the show itself. But David Lynch also wanted vocals for some of the music and for this he immediately looked to Julee Cruise who had sung ‘Mysteries of Love’ in the same film.

The voice of Julee Cruise is ethereal, haunting and ideal for a show like ‘Twin Peaks’ and, along with Badalamenti’s instrumentation, it is the lifeblood of the cult television show. With Angelo Badalamenti, David Lynch found a real kindred spirit. His compositions can range from being cool Jazz-orientated to loud, dark and disturbing. And this is made to measure for the enigma that is ‘Twin Peaks’.

Exciting news, the Skiing in italy booking is confirmed everybody, I am stoked about our New Years resolutions to take more trips together. But to keep the reservation, I need part of the overall cost by Saturday.
